Some 14,000 projects are vying for a piece of the $24.6 billion allotted to New York state by President Barack Obama's federal stimulus package, including requests by law schools and legal aid agencies.

According to a report released by the New York State Recovery and Reinvestment Cabinet, Hofstra University School of Law wants $15 million to "continue to meet its mission of educating students." Hofstra University is also requesting $115 million to build a new medical school.

Also expanding is the City University of New York, which is seeking $200 million to build a new law school in Long Island City.

And the non-profit organization LIFT, which provides legal services to unrepresented litigants in Manhattan Family Court, is requesting $250,000 to hire more staff.
