Some 14,000 projects are
vying for a piece of the $24.6 billion allotted to New York
state by President Barack Obama's federal stimulus package,
including requests by law schools and legal aid agencies.
According to a report
released by the New York State Recovery and Reinvestment
Cabinet, Hofstra University School of Law wants $15 million to
"continue to meet its mission of educating students." Hofstra
University is also requesting $115 million to build a new
medical school.
Also expanding is the
City University of New York, which is seeking $200 million to
build a new law school in Long Island City.
And the non-profit
organization LIFT, which provides legal services to
unrepresented litigants in Manhattan Family Court, is
requesting $250,000 to hire more staff.
